On this day in 1886, the City of Vancouver was incorporated. The city was named after British naval captain George Vancouver, who explored the region in the 1790s. Within weeks of incorporation, the Great Vancouver Fire destroyed most of the new city, but it was quickly rebuilt and continued to grow into the vibrant metropolis we know today.
